History of the Department

The Department of Computer Science and Applications was established on 8th August 2001 with the vision of grooming professionally qualified women who are competent enough to cope up with the challenges in the IT revolutionized world. The journey was started with a BCA batch consisting of 30 students and had marginal increase of 6 later. MSc Computer Science was started in 2004 with an intake of 12 students and had an increase of 8 later. The department has a proud history of 35 ranks altogether during these years. Many of our students are placed in several reputed institutions as well as MNCs by keeping the glory of St.Mary’s to the heights. Five of our students cleared UGC NET exam. The infrastructure, including the Computer Science and Computer Application labs were renovated and blessed in the year 2008. Apart from BCA and MSc two more courses were introduced .They are 1) UGC Add-on course in Multimedia and 2) Certificate course in Microsoft Office. Both the courses were revised and redesigned as certificate course in Graphical Designing and Advanced Course in Graphical Designing for skill enhancement program. Considering the present scenario a new certificate course ‘Web development using advanced technologies’ is also introduced .

The Department could also organize various seminars, workshops and invited talks both for students and teachers, in and out of the college during this period. The UGC sponsored national seminar on Data mining in Cloud Computing added a lovely feather to the crown. . For making students more adoptable to the present IT industry we organize several workshops and internship program in collaboration with companies from IT sector.

The different social extension programmes Computer Literacy Workshops - conducted for various communities such as Mother Parents, Nurses, School Students, Kudumbasree Members, Non teaching Staff etc. was remarkable. The social responsibility of our students were proved when they deeply involved in the computer literacy activities of differentially abled students organized every year since 2013. The students and staff serves the poor and needy by sharing lunch twice in a year through the Karunardram project initiated by the College. They learn to respect lives of underprivileged children by visting, interactng, sharing, caring, and assisting them through ‘V Care’ project initiated by the department. Also organized programs that empower women through transfer of technology and capacity enhancement.

The department organized different academic and non academic programs/activities with variant perspectives to provide an inclusive environment for both staff and students. The students are also encouraged to participate in different programs and competitions in and outside the campus conducted by different departments of various colleges/ universities which serves the purpose. And our students bagged several prizes in Intercollegiate, University, National and International Levels.

We, always concentrate on giving awareness to the sensational areas in current digital era to our stakeholders. Each individual student of the department is moulded with the specially designed curricular and co curricular activities such as in-house projects, research activities such as paper presentations and publications, career guidance programmes, industrial visits, internships, placement training and interviews, life guidance classes, mentoring sessions etc that keep them moving closer to their goals.

During the academic year 2020-21, the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and the virus has now spread to many countries and territories. Joining hands with college authorities , the department conducts regular classes through google class rooms, and provides clear and actionable guidance for safe operations through prevention. We also promote information sharing by organizing and attending webinars and workshops online.
