“The Department of Chemistry at ST. Mary’s college seeks to be recognized as one of the best chemistry departments in the state of Kerala with acknowledged excellence in instruction and research.”
Mission
“We endeavor to provide quality instruction and opportunity for research to our students and to develop in them awareness about the problems facing our society and the positive role chemistry can play in solving them”.
History of the Department
The Chemistry department of the St Mary’s college, Thrissur started functioning from the inception of the college in 1946. In 1959 the department was upgraded as a graduate department with the introduction of B Sc. Chemistry. As the college was bifurcated in 1967, the course was transplanted to Vimala College. In 1999 B.Sc. Polymer Chemistry course was introduced. The course was later changed to B.Sc. Chemistry in 2012. Currently, the sanctioned student strength of the BSc degree programme is 48. In 2014, the Department was upgraded as a PG Department by introducing a PG programme in Chemistry. Department also offers an add-on certificate course. During the academic years 2014-15 to 2016-17 a certificate course in Good Laboratory Practices was offered which was later changed to Laboratory Design and safety from 2017-18 till date.
Department has organized various International, National & regional seminars /webinars. Some of them are National seminar on Recent Advances in Chemistry (NSRAC – 15), Regional seminar on Computational & Combinatorial Chemistry, International Webinar on From Polymers To Solid State Nmr Spectroscopy, National Webinar on Overview of IPRs - Importance & Impact of Patents for Academics & Research Product . Faculty members of the department also successfully completed two Minor Research projects sponsored by UGC. We encourage our students to carry out their project work at PG level in various institutes like Cochin University, University of Kerala, National Centre for Earth Science Studies, FACT etc.An incubation center - Haritham - that motivates the students and encourages their entrepreneurial spirit by training them in manufacture of paper bag, soap, hand wash, hand sanitiser, pain balm etc.
To make teaching learning experiential we also take our students to various Industries & Research Institutions like NIT, Calicut, Pondicherry University, Excel Industries, Instrumentation lab KFRI & COVASU etc. To develop scientific temper & to inculcate a love & concern for the environment among our students we have been celebrating Environment Day, Ozone Day, Mole day, Pollution control day, National Science Day etc since the last ten years often with the financial support of KSCSTE. In 2019 the International year of Periodic table was celebrated with much fanfare & various competitions like My element Context, Quizinda spot quiz, Periodic Jigsaw, Elemental Cruise, Flash Mob, An element a day & Poster Exhibition. The department also offers an opportunity for interested students to learn driving ( 2 wheeler & 4 wheeler) to enhance their skill. Based on the motto of the college; “Scientia et disciplina”; the educational objective of the Department of Chemistry is to provide its students with knowledge needed to develop an open-minded worldview so as to enable them to bring about harmony in the nation and the world through learning Science.
