History of the Department

The Department of English came into being when the College was established in 1946 as English was offered as first language for Intermediate, BA and B Sc students. It was upgraded to a Post Graduate Department when MA in English Literature was introduced on 15th July 1962. The Department played a lead role in the curricular and co-curricular development of the institution and was a cradle for many illustrious teachers who later became Principals or Heads of the Department. Though the Department was crippled with the bifurcation of the College in 1967 when PG and UG courses were shifted to Vimala College, Cheroor, it continued to be the torch bearer of scholarship and culture for multitudes of Pre Degree students in the years to come. When Degree courses were reintroduced in 1979 the Department started teaching English as first language for UG students. But the long cherished dream of the introduction of UG Course in English Literature was fulfilled only in 2012. Since 2012 the Department has been actively engaged in multifarious activities to fulfill its vision of moulding globally competent students with good communication, critical and creative skills. On the academic front the Department provides Skill Enhancement Course in English Communication Skills and a Certificate Course in Adobe PageMaker. The Department offered the UGC sponsored AddOn in English Communication Skills from 2012 to 2016. A UGC sponsored National Seminar entitled Narratology of Harvesting was organized jointly with the Language departments in collaboration with Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 2013. The Department expanded its sphere of activities and introduced the UGC Community College Course, Diploma in Content Writing, in 2018 with the objective of equipping students with job skills and promoting life-long learning in the students..

Various events and competitions are organized every year to cater to the holistic development of the students. An Interstate Literary Fest Hiphop2K18 in which 300 participants competed is a notable achievement of the Department. Another laudable event was the Street Play organized in collaboration with Lions Club, Thrissur at Sakthan bus stand in 2017. Story Telling Workshop, Manuscript Magazine Competition, Wonder Woman Competition and Best Journal Competition are conducted annually to promote creativity in the students. The Department is also in charge of the Literary Club which nurtures the literary talent of the students.

As part of academic extension activities the Department provides consultancy and organizes Communication Skills workshops at different institutions. For the past three years our faculty has offered this workshop at College of Forestry, Vellanikara. Translation works are also undertaken by the faculty. Community extension activities of the Department include Awareness classes on Organ Donation and Drug Abuse. Exhibition and Sale of handicrafts made by the mentally challenged inmates of AMHA is another noteworthy event organized annually by the Department.
