History of the Department
Department of Botany was established in the year 1993 by introducing B.Sc Course in Botany with a sanctioned student intake of 24. Sanctioned intake has been increased in the successive years and reached to 40 in the current academic year. In 2014, Department has upgraded as PG Department by introducing PG programme in Botany. Department started UGC -Career oriented add-on certificate course in Tissue Culture in 2014-15. Later, this one year certificate course has been raised to two years Diploma and three years advanced Diploma in 2016-17 and 2017-18 respectively. In addition, Department also undertakes certificate course on Food and Nutrition as part of skill development programme.
Department has organized 4 National Seminars viz: UGC sponsored 3-day National Seminar on ‘Ecotechnologies and Evergreen Revolution’ in 2009, UGC sponsored 2-day National seminar on Nanobiotechnology in 2011, KSCSTE sponsored two day national seminar on ‘Know the plants, Grow the plants’ in the academic year 2014-15 and KSCSTE sponsored two day national seminar on ‘Habitat Restoration and Butterfly Conservation’ in 2016-17. Faculty members of the Department has published more than 70 papers in National and International peer reviewed journals and presented more than 40 papers in National and International Conferences. Three Minor Research projects sponsored by UGC and one Science Popularization Programme funded by KSCSTE were successfully completed by the faculty members. Department ensures an atmosphere of experiential learning for its students by providing them the opportunities to interact with the eminent personalities of various Research Institutions and to understand the research works going on in these Institutions.
Department has signed an MoU with M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), Kalpetta, Wayanadu for establishing a RET garden in the campus for conserving Rare, Endangered and Threatened species. Another MoU has been signed with Research Department of Botany, St. Thomas College, Thrissur for utilizing the laboratory facilities of Botany Department for carrying out short term research works of PhD students of St.Thomas College, Thrissur. Department also has MoU with State Museum and Zoo, Thrissur for establishing and maintaining Butterfly garden in the Zoo.
